The most popular type of betting that happens during the March Madness tournament is betting on each individual game played. There are different ways you can bet on the March Madness games, with money line betting, spread betting and game total betting being the most popular. We will go over how each type of betting works below:
March Madness Spread Betting Explained:
The most popular type of betting on the March Madness and basketball in general is "against the spread". The spread is a set number that the oddsmakers (people who decide what the odds of each game will be) think the favored team should win by. For example if Kansas was favored to win by 6.5 points against Villanova, the spread would be 6.5 points. Here is what this would look like:
Villanova Wildcats +6.5
vs Kansas Jayhawks -6.5
In spread betting you will either have to choose for the favored team to "cover the spread", meaning they will win by more then the set amount they are favored by, or you can choose the underdogs to "beat the spread", meaning they will lose by less then the set spread or outright win the game.
In our example, if you were to bet on Kansas to cover the spread they would have to win by 7 or more points (more then the 6.5 spread). If you were to bet on Villanova the would have to lose by 6 or less points or win the game (less then the 6.5 spread).
The odds set on either team on the spread is almost always the same in basketball, as the oddsmakers set it to a number in which they think the game will land very close to.
March Madness Money Line Betting Explained:
Another very popular type of College Basketball betting is called money line betting. Betting the money line is simply picking either team to win the game outright. This is a lot easier for beginners to understand because of the simple concept. Here is an example of what a money line bet would look like:
Michigan State Spartans (+175)
vs Kentucky Wildcats (-195)
In our example you could either choose the Michigan State Spartans to win the game or the Kentucky Wildcats to win. Each team has different betting odds associated with choosing them to win, with the underdogs of course paying out more money then the team that is favored.

March Madness Game Total Betting Explained:
The other popular type of betting done on March Madness Basketball is Game Total Betting, which is betting on the final score of the game. The oddsmakers will set a total score (combined by both teams) that they think the game will land on. You will then have the option to bet on either under or over that set number. Here is an example of what a game total betting line would look like:
Game Total - 142.5
Over 142.5
Under 142.5
You have the option to bet Under 142.5, which means the total score of the two teams added up must equal 142 or less in order to win. Or you could bet Over which means the total score would have to add up to 143 or higher in order to win your bet. Just like the spread betting, the odds for the over and under are usually equal.
