March Madness Betting Odds Explained:

At almost anywhere you place bets on the March Madness you will find American Odds. There are different types of ways to display betting odds, but American Odds are listed 95% of the time in North America.

NCAA Basketball Odds Example:

Texas Longhorns (+130)
vs. Michigan State Spartans (-150)

In this example the numbers in brackets represent the odds. Both +130 and -150 are American style odds which you are most likely to see when betting on the March Madness.

The first thing to learn is what the positive (+) and negative (-) sign represent. The + sign in front of the number indicate that placing that bet would pay you more money than the amount you wagered. This is seen on underdogs, as you are less likely to win therefore you have a higher payout. The – sign in front of the number indicates that placing that bet would pay out less money than the amount you wagered. This is seen on teams or events that are favourites, as you more likely to win the bet resulting in less of a payout.

The next thing you will need to know is what the number represents. Depending on whether the odd has a + or – will depend on what the number indicates. This is a tiny bit tricky for new bettors to understand so I will try to make it simple and I will use the example giving above with Texas and Michigan.

If the number has a + sign in front of it that will mean the number indicates what a $100 bet on that outcome would payout. Using the +130 beside Texas, this shows us that a $100 bet on Texas would pay out $130 (which is a total of $230 back if you include your amount wagered). Understand? So if the odds were +280 a $100 bet would pay out $280 (plus your original $100 bet back for a total of $380). This can be converted to $10 bets simply by moving the decimal one place to the left.

If the number has a - sign in front of it that means it is showing you how much you have to wager in order to win $100. Using the -150 odds listed on Michigan in our example, this shows us that you must bet $150 in order to win $100 (plus your original $150 wager for a total of $250). This is a little trickier to understand so we will give another example. If the odds listed were -200 it is showing you that you would have to place a $200 bet in order to win $100 (remember these are listed with favorites, so your payout will also be less than the amount wagered).

Again these odds can always be converted to $10 bets by moving the decimal to the left one place, but you won’t even need to worry about calculating the odds. The online betting sites will do the calculations for you. You will simply need to enter the outcome you want to place a bet on and the amount you want to wager and they will always display your possible payout before you confirm your bet.
