What is March Madness Money Line Betting:

If you are new to betting you will want to check out our article that will help you Learn How To Bet on March Madness Basketball, which gives you the fill detailed explanation on all kinds of March Madness Betting. But for those who just need a quick explanation on how money line betting works we give an example below.

Money Line betting is simply picking either team to win the game straight up. There is no spread that the teams will have to win by in order to win your bet, the team will just need to win the game outright.

Here is an example of what a money line would look like:

Kansas (-170)
vs Michigan State (+150)

The numbers in brackets represent the odds on each team to win the game outright, which shows you how much your bet on that team would payout. You will never need to do any calculations when betting on the money line, because the online sportsbooks do that for you, but it is important to get a simple understanding of how it works.

The number will either have a positive (+) or negative (-) sign in front of it. The + sign shows that placing a bet on that team will payout more than the amount you wager, while the - sign shows that the bet will payout less than the amount you wagered.

Positive signs are of course given to teams that are less likely to win, while negative signs are given to teams which are more likely to win on the money line.

If the number has a + sign in front of it then it will be showing you how much you would win on a $100 bet. Using our +150 example above, this shows us that a $100 bet on Michigan State would pay out $150 in profit (or $250 total).

If the number has a - sign in front of it then it will be showing you how much you will need to bet in order to win $100. Using our -170 example above, this shows us that you would need to wager $170 on Kansas in order to win $100 in profits ($270 total).

Money Line Betting on the March Madness can be a lot of fun, especially when you want to choose the big underdogs. If you are looking to pick teams that are highly favored to win you are probably better off laying a bet against the spread to get more value.
