Georgetown March Madness Predictions

Article Updated March 14th, 2010

The Georgetown Hoyas look to make a splash at this year’s NCAA March Madness Tournament after missing out last year due to a late-season collapse. The Hoyas have had an up and down season, but fared well in their Big East tournament knocking off South Florida, projected #1 seed Syracuse, and Marquette, before losing in the championship game to West Virginia. Georgetown comes into the March Madness tournament with a 23-10 overall record, and are hoping to be named to a #2 seed this afternoon.

Georgetown Hoyas Tournament Prediction

The Georgetown Hoyas have made 25 NCAA Tournament appearances, making it to the Final Four five times. The Hoyas most recent Final Four appearance was in 2007 where they made it for the first time in 22 years and were knocked out by the Ohio State Buckeyes in the semi-final round. If Georgetown wants to make it deep into this year’s tournament, the need to do what they’ve done so well all year continue to hit their field goal shots, and have Monroe dominate under the net and come up with rebounds. The Hoyas are on a bit of a roll as of late and I think they could see themselves crack the Elite Eight.

Team Offense – Georgetown’s offense has been excellent this year, led by red hot Austin Freeman who has been on a tear, coming off of a season high performance where he had 29 points in a big win against Louisville last week. Freeman is 15th in the Nation in 3-point shooting converting 48.1% and sits in the top 100 averaging 17.5 points per game. Also contributing to Georgetown’s 73.6 points per game offense is Greg Monroe and Chris Wright who both average over 14 points per game and just under 4 assists. The Hoyas are going to need Freeman to continue to play the way he has been if they anticipate to take this school to their sixth Final Four appearance.

Team Defense – The Hoyas defense is led by 6’11” Sophomore Greg Monroe, who ranks No. 32 in the Nation with 9.6 rebounds per game, and has come up with 35 steals, and 46 blocks in his 26 games this year. Georgetown’s defense allows an average of 65.1 points per game and has held opponents to 70 points or less in 16 of their 19 wins this season. The Hoyas need to continue to play solid defense in order to win games and have a shot of a deep run into this year’s tournament.
