Villanova March Madness Predictions

Article Updated March 14th, 2010

One of last year's tournament's most surprising teams was the Villanova Wildcats. They made an unexpected run all the way to last year's Final Four before being eliminated by future tournament champions, the North Carolina Tarheels. The Wildcats had a very poor outing in the Big East tournament, getting dumped by un-ranked Marquette in the first round by a score of 80-76. The Villanova Wildcats come into the tournament with a 24-7 overall record, and were 13-5 in Big East play. The Wildcats were ranked in the top 10 all season, but I am not sure they are deserving of that right now dropping their last two games coming into the tournament.

Villanova Wildcats Tournament Prediction

Like mentioned, the Wildcats made a semi-Cinderella run into last year's Final Four, but I am not quite sure it is their year this season. In 30 tournament appearances, the Wildcats have managed just 4 Final Four appearances, with a single Championship in 1985. An overall tournament record of 48-30 is good, but it is a far stretch to say that the Wildcats are a legit powerhouse every year. I look for a Sweet Sixteen appearance in this year's March Madness tournament for Villanova, and they will have to scratch and crawl for anything else after that point.

Team Offense - The Wildcat offense is led by Senior Guard Scottie Reynolds, who averages almost 19 points and 4 assists per game. Leading the way on the offensive glass for the Wildcats are Antonio Pena and Taylor King, who have combined for 99 offensive rebounds this season. Nonetheless, the Wildcat offense runs through Scottie Reynolds. Not only does the Guard score the most, he also plays the most minutes for this feisty Wildcat offense that averages 85 points per game.

Team Defense - The Villanova defense will have to improve if they have any hopes of making another Final Four appearance in this year's tournament. The Wildcats gave up 103 points @ Georgetown on Feb 6th, and have given up more than 75 points on 7 different occasions this season. The defense has not been terrible, giving up an average of 72 points per game this season, and Forward Antonio Pena has grabbed 117 defensive boards this season which leads the Wildcats defense.
